100 Strokes to Sleep
After Graduation, the one where the Mayor turned into a giant demon snake, Xander had to get out of Sunnydale for a while. After all, there’s only so much a guy can take, and he’d lived over the Hellmouth his whole life, so he figured he deserved a break. He needed to get out of town. And so he set off on an adventure. The all-American tradition of a road trip; where it’s pedal to the metal, and where rubber meets road and the wind in your hair annoys the crap out of you, but you have to have the windows down because the A/C is shot to hell and its 96 freakin’ degrees outside.
But hey, he was on his way somewhere, anywhere, and it felt good. It felt great, actually, until he heard some clunk-a-clunk sound coming from the engine. He crossed his fingers and kept driving, hoping the noise would just go away. Please, please, please go away.
It didn’t.
So he was greatly dismayed but less than surprised when the car just quit working about 50 miles short of Oxnard, California. He guided the car to the side of the road, and once it stopped indulged himself with a few head bangs against the steering wheel. Then he dragged himself out of the car and shut the door, leaning against it. He stuck his thumb out and prayed someone would pick him up before dark.
This was the best vacation ever.
Oh yeah, even stuck on the side of the road with a broken down car, no phone, no water, and in heat that threatened to melt his hair into his skull, he could still do sarcasm.
Five hours later and he’d switched from leaning on the car to sitting on its roof. The heat was still brutal and he had turned a delightful shade of pink before thinking to dig out the suntan lotion. The appendage now shown to the cars flying by him was no longer a thumb, but a middle finger. It had become obvious that no one was inclined to pick him up. He’d thought about trying to walk, but 50 miles was pretty far, and here he at least had his car to hide in and lock the doors if something scary came along.
Two hours after that and the sun had abandoned him to his fate. The air was cooler, and the shirt that was still damp with sweat from the heat of the day now caused him to shiver in the slight breeze. He’d stopped raising his thumb at the passing cars about a million cars ago, since the two million before that hadn’t even slowed down as they zoomed on by. Now he just watched them wearily.
Until one of them didn’t zoom on by, or it did, but then with a loud squeal the black car stopped and reversed direction until it came to a halt right next to Xander’s car. Xander hopped off the roof that he’d been sitting on and opened his car door, ready to jump for cover if there was trouble. The driver of the mysterious black car got out, and one look at that terrifyingly familiar bleached blond and slicked back hair had Xander diving into his car and slamming the door closed. He locked all the doors with the push of a button, and kept his finger jammed down on it for good measure.
The other driver, now identified as Spike, the crazy English vampire who crashed parent-teacher night, cocked his head to the side and walked slowly over to Xander’s car. Bending over, he peered into the window. “You seem a bit jumpy mate, come on out and I’ll give you a ride into town.” The accent was just as sexy evil sounding as it had been in high school.
“Get away you bleached freak, I don’t need your kind of help!” Xander shouted as he pushed a cross up against the window. Spike’s head jerked back in surprise and his eyes yellowed.
“Well, if you know what I am,” Spike said as he stood up, “then this should be a little more fun.” He reached out and yanked the car door open, despite the lock, exposing Xander to the open air. He chuckled at the sight of Xander scrunched up in the passenger seat, pressing himself against the door and holding the cross out in front of him like a shield.
Spike struck, with movement that was too fast for any normal human to have time to react he had grabbed the cross out of Xander’s hands and flung away, ignoring the slight pain of his singed hand. He then grabbed Xander’s ankles and yanked him out of the car, his body hitting the dirt with a ‘whump.’ Spike reached down and took hold of Xander’s shirt, hauling him upright. He took a step back and held Xander at arm’s length. Xander opened his mouth to say something, but didn’t get the chance to finish before Spike punched him hard enough to knock him out.
As he watched Spike’s fist coming toward him his last thought was, “oh crap.”
